Legally changing your name is often mistaken for a simple process, because people do it every day in marriage, divorce, adoption, or for whatever reason. In principle, it is pretty simple. In practice however, there is more involved than you might think.
There are two options for changing your name: common usage, and the formal court process. While common usage has its perks (it is free and the only requirement is that you start using your new name), it isn’t as simple as it seems. For instance, imagine convincing your bank, a credit card company, the IRS or a passport official, without any legal documentation, that your name is different than their records indicate. For this reason, the formal court process is recommended.
If you plan to change your name using the formal court process, consider calling on the services of attorney. There is a lot of paperwork, and mistakes can mean big problems down the line. The Carson Law Firm understands the legal process of changing your name in Missouri. Arrange an appointment with one of our family law attorneys to discuss your options. |
